Dawe still the man to beat

Bill Dawe once again showed that he is in a class of his own winning the Open Singles title for the third year in a row after a 11-4,11-4,14-12 victory against Woodchester club mate Tony Clarkson. Clarkson overcame an in-form Andy Maybee in a close 5 setter to reach the final and was the only player to beat Dawe in the league but Dawe was too good when it really mattered.
Despite that one league defeat Dawe retained the Pat Toomer Shield with an average of 98% He capped a very successful evening by teaming up with with Mike Kiff to win the Open Doubles against Tony Clarkson and Dennis Wadley also from Woodchester. Clarkson and Wadley took the first game 16-14 and an upset looked on the cards but Dawe and Kiff took the next three games 11-4, 11-9, 11-9 to take the title for the third year in a row.

Andy Maybee became the Veterans champion winning a predictably close match 7-11, 11-4, 11-8, 12-10 against teammate Dave Adamson.

Dave Adamson and Suzy Robinson retained the Mixed Doubles trophy with a 6-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5 win against Bill Dawe and Tracy Dibble

It was good to see Carol Philp back in the tournament after a few years absence and she gave Suzy Robinson plenty to think about in the Ladies Singles final. Robinson eventually came through 11-5, 12-10, 13-11 to continue her domination of the event she has now won for the last four years

The Division 2 title went to Craig Smart (Forest Green) with an excellent 11-7, 7-11, 11-9, 11-5 win against the top seed Alan Churchill (Whiteshill). To get to the final Smart came back from 2-1 down against Carol Philp to win 11-8, 7-11, 11-13, 11-7, 11-7 and Alan Churchill went through 5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8 against Jimmy Haycraft.

Leading the averages with 94%, Dave Pugh was top seed in the Division 3 knockout event and an all-Nailsworth final against number 2 seed Mickey Holbrow was on the cards. However, Simon Philp from Frampton had other ideas firstly knocking out Holbrow in a tense and very close semi-final which he eventually won 11-5, 8-11, 11-13, 11-3, 13-11 and then comfortably overcoming Pugh in the final 11-8, 11-6, 11-9 to become Division 3 champion

The Division 4 final was an all-Randwick affair between Mark Edwards and Gavin Collings. Edwards was made to work hard by young Dan Ind in the semi-finals before winning 11-9, 11-8, 11-6 and Collings had an excellent semi-final win by a similar margin 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 against second seed and the more experienced Ian Browning. However, Number 1 seed Edwards’ all-round game was too good for Collings in the final, which he won in straight sets12-10, 11-8,11-6

The Paul Bowcott award went to Richard Evans from Pessimists. Richard underwent a major heart operation last year and came through that to play a full league season and Captain Pessimists to a respectable 4th place in Division 3. This was despite the fact that he often had only Barry Morgan for company after Dave Butler withdrew at the beginning of the season as a result of further back problems.

The Committee Award was presented to Dave Adamson for his work over a number of years at Forest Green TTC, contribution to the SDTTL and County representation.

Junior Competitions
Collings wins U13’s, U15’s and U18’s

A record total of 27 players took part in this year’s junior tournament – 25 boys and 2 girls 6 schools and 4 league clubs were represented.

U-11 (boys and girls)
Group 1 winner was Sam Collings (Sapperton Primary) with Christopher Wilden (Chalford Primary) runner-up.
Group 2 winner was William Cole (Woodchester Primary) with Wojtek Dziamski (TKS) runner-up
In the semi-finals Sam beat Wojtek 11-6, 6-11, 11-3, 11-8 and William beat Christopher 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7 in a very close match
The two youngest players in the tournament contested the final. Sam Collings aged 7 came out on top against William Cole aged 8 after two close games to win 11-7, 11-9, 11-1

Girls U-13
Only 2 girls entered the whole tournament, which was disappointing.
However Emily Philp and Eve Gardener took full advantage and played out the final which Eve won in straights sets 11-5, 11-9, 11-5

Girls U18

Boys U13
16 players started the U13 competition including a number from the U-11 competition and were split into 4 groups with the group winners going through to the semi-finals
Group 1 was won by Archie Cook (Randwick) edging out William Cole (Woodchester Primary) by coming out on top in their match 11-6, 11-4, 8-11, 15-13
Group 2 was won by Oscar Costelloe (Randwick) after winning a close match against Aaron Taylor (Rednock) 11-7, 8-11, 11-4, 11-6
Harry Gwilliam (Rednock) was unbeaten on his way to winning Group 3 as was Jack Collings (Randwick) to win Group 4
The first semi-final was an all Randwick affair between Oscar and Archie, which, after a long first game, Oscar won in straight sets 15-13, 11-5, 11-3
Harry Gwilliam gave title favourite Jack Collings a good game in the other semi-final before going out 11-8, 11-8, 11-0.
In the final, Jack was in top form and in no mood to do Randwick club mate Oscar any favours winning emphatically 11-2, 11-2, 11-1

Boys U15
Dan Ind and Jack Collings (both Randwick) comfortably won groups 2 and 3 respectively to reach the semi-finals.
In Group 1 Harry Gwilliam (Rednock) came from 2 sets down to beat an unlucky Ben Glover (Randwick) 5-11, 8-11, 11-3, 12-10, 11-6 to go through
Archie Cook gained revenge for the U-13’s defeat by Oscar Costelloe winning 11-6, 3-11, 12-10, 11-9 but then lost narrowly to Aaron Taylor (Rednock) who went on to win the group
Harry Gwilliam put up a very good fight against Division 4 league player Dan Ind in the semi-finals but Dan’s experience enabled him to take the match 12-10, 11-5, 11-9
In the other semi-final Jack Collings progressed to the final following a 11-6, 11-4, 11-3 win against Aaron Taylor and continued his impressive form into the final beating Dan Ind 11-4, 11-2, 11-4 to take his second title

Boys U18
This year’s Boys U18 tournament proved to be the most exciting and closest competition for many years involving Stroud’s evenly matched top Juniors.
In the first semi-final, top seed Jack Thomas (Frampton) eventually got the better of Declan Fardon (Randwick) 10-12, 11-6, 11-4, 11-4 to reach the final. The second semi-final was worthy of the final itself. Will Sadlier (Randwick) came up against the U13 and U15 winner and Division 4 team mate Jack Collings and after some determined play won the first 2 games 11-9, 12-10 and was close to retaining the title he won last year. However, Jack’s attacking play won him the next two games 11-6, 12-10 to set up a deciding final game. This was as tense as it comes with the lead changing regularly until Jack finally won it 12-10
The stage was set then for an exciting final between two very talented players, Jack Thomas and Jack Collings, the top two seeds. These two had already met in the league and the Divisional knockout competition with Thomas coming out on top each time with all the matches going to 5 sets and so another close encounter was expected.
Playing in front of a good finals-night crowd, both players started nervously and although there were excellent rallies at times the match didn’t quite live up to expectations but it was certainly close – another 5 setter. Playing the more controlled game, Thomas went into a 2-1 lead and at 8-6 up in the fourth game was favourite for the title. However, to his credit, Collings continued to attack and serving well, managed to take the fourth game 12-10. This seemed to knock Thomas’s confidence and after some encouraging words from coach Graham Slack, Collings took the last game to win 6-11, 11-9, 4-11, 12-10, 11-4 and claim all three junior titles - a remarkable achievement for the 12 year old.

Junior Doubles
This year’s champions are Will Sadlier and Declan Fardon (Randwick) beating 2007 champions Jack Thomas (Frampton) and Nick Butler (Forest Green) 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 11-6.
In the semi-finals Thomas and Butler beat the Forest Green pair of Joe Woodley and Mike Kilcooley 11-7, 11-2, 11-5. Sadlier and Fardon had a much tougher match and had to come from two games down to beat Jack Collings and Dan Ind (Randwick) 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-2

It was over 30 years ago that a player last won all three junior boys events in the same season
Then it was another 12 year old, Andrew Golding from Nailsworth TT club who went on to dominate junior and senior competitions for a number of seasons in the Stroud League. Now Stroud has a new talent in Jack Collings currently with Randwick TTC and he looks set to follow a similar path and may go even further.

2009 Albert Handicap Knockout Cup
Yate take cup by just 3 points in thriller The final of the ‘09’Albert Mann Cup was played out at Forest Green on 30th March between the unchanged Yate team of Andy Cox, Will Berkley and Grant Whittaker against the also unchanged Randwick ‘B’ team of Will Sadlier, Declan Fardon and David Perry.

The experienced and very talented Yate from Division 1 had before them the very daunting task of pulling back a 257 point handicap against an impressively talented young team that were capable of playing a controlled game without losing the nerve to strike when all seemed favourable – a combination that was the undoing of Woodchester A in the semi-final.

The collision between these opposing talents created an electrifying final for the spectators and a showcase match for the Albert Mann Cup that raises the bar for other finals in years to come.

It was from start to finish a thrilling contest with both teams very much living on their nerves punctuated frequently by stunning rallies and inspired strikes from both ends of the table. After an exciting and nail-biting 2.75 hours, we reached a position in the final game with Will Sadlier on 3 and Andy Cox on 8 and both needing 3 points to win the cup. Will rose to the challenge admirably but good fortune, experience and sheer talent saw Andy home to give Yate victory by just 3 points and an overall score of 383 to 380.

To conclude, this match was best summed up by SDTTL Chairman John Bunn ‘That was by far the best Albert Mann Cup Final I have ever seen’
