The Stroud Table Tennis Club restarts its weekly coaching sessions on 7th January at the High School, 11am to 1pm

2011-12 Stroud Tournament

It is nearly time for the highlight of every season – the Stroud Tournament. The tournament is on Sunday 11th March. Please could you remind all your club member to get their entries in in good time.

Entry forms are in the handbook, but you can enter by emailing me, Dave Lloyd at ddl@enhydra.co.uk.

Remember the tournament is free to enter and is for juniors and seniors. Last season we were a bit pushed for time, but this year we have extra space at Deer park so the event should run a little easier. I will advise start times to all nearer the time when I have a better idea of entries.

The tournament is not just for the Div 1 players, apart from the Divisional singles competition the Open Singles is normally played with a group stage first, so everyone gets plenty of table tennis.

Finals night is on the Friday 13th April, and this year just to be clear the following will be played on Finals night –
Open Singles Semi-Finals & Final
Boys U18 Final
Veterans Final
Mixed Doubles Final
Open Doubles Final

As always I will be looking for willing volunteers to help with organisation on the day – I have not been let down yet.

Can I also put in a short plug for the Gloucester Closed, also at Deer Park this year, on Saturday 28th April. Last year was the first time the Glos Closed was free to enter, and the response to this was very good, so it is free again this year. Or put it another way, your subs are paying for it so you might as well join in!

A note from organiser Graham Slack "I feel it necessary to explain the reasons for the problems in coming to a suitable date this season. We originally booked Deer Park for 10 December 2011 but we were later told that the school had made a mistake and double booked the school. The gymnastics could not reschedule their event as they had spent £2,500 on hiring a sprung floor for their event and couldn’t book it for another date without losing their money. We therefore looked at alternative dates (which were few and far between) and settled for Sunday 8 January. Some of our top veterans then told us that they were playing in the Vets Western Masters in Hereford on that day and had already booked their overnight accommodation so they asked if we could change the date again. We again contacted the school and were given a list of dates that were still available. At the time the latest date available was Saturday 14 April so we booked it. Once again the veterans came back to us advising that they were all in the Vets Southern Masters in Crawley that day and asked if we could change it again.

As all the veterans have given loyal service to Gloucestershire over the years we felt that we should do everything we could to allow them to play in our county closed.

So, the date is now Saturday 28 April and will not be changed again even if a group of 10 players have arranged to walk their dogs together on that day! I apologise for messing you all around but the Cirencester committee (of which I am also chairman) feel that we should encourage as many entrants into the county closed as possible and that we should also aim to achieve the highest standard possible. This will not be achieved if our best players are absent."

Stroud Youth League - results and reports to follow

Another note from Graham Slack...
Hi everyone,

As 2011 comes to a close I imagine you will all have had good and bad results in your matches, tournaments, etc but that is what keeps us all enthusiastic about our fantastic sport. Without you all our leagues would not be able to continue so you are the vital to the survival and development of our sport. 2012 will be a fantastic year for us all as the Olympics will inspire many youngsters and older people to take up table tennis and we must be prepared for a large influx of new players. We can manage this with your help.

Table tennis players fall into several categories:-

Players who have served on committees in the past and have “done their bit” for table tennis. We all owe these players a big thank you.

Players who currently serve on committees. These are the people who keep our leagues going and we also owe these a big thank you.

Players who moan whenever they can and never help. We would like these players to use their energy in a positive way and consider joining their local committee.

Players who play and have never considered helping. These players are vital to our leagues but have so much to offer in other ways. Please consider helping you local committee.

Junior players who need help from us all to put Gloucestershire back to the top of table tennis in England.

I imagine you will all know which category you fall in and whether you are able to offer Gloucestershire TTA your ideas, etc. We always need more help and would appreciate any offers from you. Please let me know if you are able to offer any help.

I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing many of you in 2012.
